Interlayer transport in high-TC cuprates is mediated by superconducting tunneling across the CuO2 planes. For this reason, the terahertz frequency optical response is dominated by one or more Josephson plasma resonances and becomes highly nonlinear at fields for which the tunneling supercurrents approach their critical value, IC. These large terahertz nonlinearities are in fact a hallmark of superconducting transport. Surprisingly, however, they have been documented in La2-xBaxCuO4 also above…

Probing optically silent superfluid stripes in cuprates
The findings suggest the formation of a peculiar spatially modulated superconducting state called the pair-density wave, in which nonlinear mixing of optically silent tunneling modes drives large dipole-carrying supercurrents.
Optically induced superconductivity in striped La2‐xBaxCuO4 by polarization‐selective excitation in the near infrared
We show that superconducting interlayer coupling, which coexists with and is depressed by stripe order in La1.885Ba0.115CuO4, can be enhanced by excitation with near-infrared laser pulses. For

A State of High Tc Superconductivity There are strong indications that high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates is formed amid competing orders, but only two have been observed
Striped superconductors: how spin, charge and superconducting orders intertwine in the cuprates
Recent transport experiments in the original cuprate high temperature superconductor, La2−xBaxCuO4, have revealed a remarkable sequence of transitions and crossovers that give rise to a form of
Amperean pairing and the pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors
The enigmatic pseudogap phase in underdoped cuprate high T_c superconductors has long been recognized as a central puzzle of the T_c problem. Recent data show that the pseudogap is likely a distinct
Vanishing of phase coherence in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ
Although the binding of electrons into Cooper pairs is essential in forming the superconducting state, its remarkable properties—zero resistance and perfect diamagnetism—require phase coherence among

Optical excitation of Josephson plasma solitons in a cuprate superconductor.
The JPS becomes observable as it causes a transparency window in the opaque spectral region immediately below the plasma resonance, which may lead to new applications in terahertz-frequency plasmonics, in information storage and transport and in the manipulation of high-Tc superconductivity.
Evidence for stripe correlations of spins and holes in copper oxide superconductors
ONE of the long-standing mysteries associated with the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors concerns the anomalous suppression1 of superconductivity in La2-xBaxCuO4 (and certain related
Probing coherent charge fluctuations in YBa2Cu3O6+x at wavevectors outside the light cone
The possible existence of phase-incoherent superconductivity in the normal state of cuprates is one of the grand unsolved problems of modern condensed matter physics. Optical spectroscopy shows that
