Paranasal sinus pneumatization in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is less extensive compared to the general population and seems to be correlated to CF genotype. Interestingly, in CF patients temporal bone pneumatization (TBP) is more extensive compared to the general population, and middle ear pathology is generally uncommon in CF. It is debated whether TBP is influenced environmentally or genetically. The aim of the present study was to investigate pneumatization of the temporal bone in…
Changes in the inner ear structures in cystic fibrosis patients.
A new theory on the pathogenesis of acquired cholesteatoma: Mucosal traction
TLDR
A new hypothesis, based upon a conjecture that mucosal membrane interactions are the driving force in cholesteatoma, is proposed, that mucosa membrane interaction are the drive force in the disease.
Audiometric assessment of pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis.
Functional Impacts of Aminoglycoside Treatment on Speech Perception and Extended High-Frequency Hearing Loss in a Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Cohort.
TLDR
Individuals with cystic fibrosis have a higher prevalence of conductive, mixed, and sensorineural hearing loss; poorer speech-in-noise performance; and higher rates of multiple symptoms associated with otologic disorders compared to controls.
Functional Impacts of Aminoglycoside Treatment on Speech Perception and Extended High-Frequency Hearing Loss in Cystic Fibrosis
TLDR
Individuals with cystic fibrosis have a higher prevalence of conductive, mixed and sensorineural hearing loss, poorer speech-in-noise performance and higher rates of multiple symptoms associated with otologic disorders compared to controls.
Growth pattern of temporal bone pneumatization: a computed tomography study with consecutive age groups
TLDR
The TBP volume shows a linear growth pattern from birth until reaching adult size after 14 years old, and was larger in all the male groups older than 6 years than in other groups.
Pneumatization Patterns of the Petrous Apex and Lateral Sphenoid Recess
TLDR
This study is the first to provide normative data comparing pneumatization of the petrous apex and sphenoid sinus, and may support future work evaluating the utility of an endonasal approach to thepetrous apex.

TLDR
Cystic fibrosis patients commonly have nasal polyps and sinusitis, but surprisingly are spared from an increased occurrence of otitis media, as determined by computed tomography.
Temporal bone pneumatization and its relationship to paranasal sinus development in cystic fibrosis.
TLDR
TBP is well preserved in the CF population and DeltaF508 homozygosity correlates with greater TBP, with the underlying mechanisms being unclear, and Genotype might play a role in skull base pneumatization.
CT characterization of developmental variations of the paranasal sinuses in cystic fibrosis
TLDR
Genetically verified CF patients had less developed sinuses, lacked pneumatization variants, and more often had anatomic variants that predispose to complications during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) to describe variations of paranasal sinus development in patients with cystic fibrosis.
CT characterization of developmental variations of the paranasal sinuses in cystic fibrosis.
TLDR
Frontal sinus aplasia and maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinus hypoplasia were markedly more frequent in CF-2 than in control patients and in non-CF patients examined for inflammatory sinonasal disease.

TLDR
Low densities of goblet cells in temporal bones with CF may contribute reduced amounts of viscous mucus, which can lead to a low incidence of otitis media.

TLDR
The CT scans of cystic fibrosis patients were characterized by uncinate process demineralization and medial displacement of the lateral nasal wall in the middle meatus, and decreased maxillary sinus pneumatization, and patients with chronic sinusitis had anatomic anomalies.
