Template induced precursor formation in heterogeneous nucleation -- Controlling polymorph selection and nucleation efficiency

We present an atomistic study of heterogeneous nucleation in Ni employing transition path sampling, which reveals a template precursor-mediated mechanism of crystallization. Most notably, we find that the ability of tiny templates to modify the structural features of the liquid and promote the formation of precursor regions with enhanced bond-orientational order is key to determine their nucleation efficiency and the polymorphs that crystallize. Our results reveal an intrinsic link between… Expand

Atomistic insight into the non-classical nucleation mechanism during solidification in Ni.
Analysis of the transition path ensemble reveals a mechanism that deviates from the classical picture of nucleation: the growing solid clusters have predominantly non-spherical shapes and consist of face-centered-cubic and random hexagonal-close-packed coordinated atoms surrounded by a cloud of prestructured liquid. Nucleation barriers for the liquid-to-crystal transition in Ni: experiment and simulation.
Evidence is given that nucleation rates J correspond to homogeneous nucleation in undercooled Ni, and free energy barriers ΔG*, as extracted from the measured J, are in very good agreement with those from the MC simulation. Expand
Numerical Simulation of Crystal Nucleation in Colloids
This article reviews the recent progress that has been made in the application of computer simulations to study crystal nucleation in colloidal systems. We discuss the concept and the numericalExpand
Bond-orientational order in liquids and glasses
Bond-orientational order in molecular-dynamics simulations of supercooled liquids and in models of metallic glasses is studied. Quadratic and third-order invariants formed from bond sphericalExpand
Method for computing short-range forces between solid-liquid interfaces driving grain boundary premelting.
The short-range repulsion driving premelting is found to be dominant in comparison to long-range dispersion and entropic forces and consistent with previous experimental findings that nanometer-scale layer widths may be observed only very close to the melting point. Expand

A consistent set of embedding functions and pair interactions for use with the embedded-atom method have been determined empirically to describe the fcc metals Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Pd, and Pt as well as alloys containing these metals. Expand
Accurate determination of crystal structures based on averaged local bond order parameters.
This work proposes a modification of this method in which the complex bond order vectors are averaged over the first neighbor shell of a given particle and the particle itself, which considerably improves the accuracy with which different crystal structures can be distinguished. Expand
Transition path sampling and the calculation of rate constants
We have developed a method to study transition pathways for rare events in complex systems. The method can be used to determine rate constants for transitions between stable states by turning theExpand

This work shows how, by including both the backward and forward reactions, the corresponding rate constants, as well as the free energy barrier can be computed in a single simulation. Expand
Reaction rate calculation by parallel path swapping.
A new algorithmic procedure based on the transition interface sampling technique, in the same spirit of parallel tempering, paths between different ensembles are swapped, but the role of temperature is here played by the interface position. Expand
