Knowledge of cell membrane permeability characteristics facilitates the design of cryopreservation protocols which minimize damage from osmotic stress and reduce the incidence of intracellular freezing. Such permeability characteristics can be determined for oocytes from volume measurements taken during exposure to cryoprotectant.
