AbstractThe variation of near-surface air temperature anomalies in Africa between 1979 and 2010 is investigated primarily using Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) total lower-tropospheric temperature data from the Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) datasets. Significant increasing temperature trends were found in each of the following regions examined: all of Africa, Northern Hemisphere Africa, Southern Hemisphere Africa, tropical Africa, and subtropical…
Southern Africa winter temperature shifts and their link to the Southern Annular Mode
Abstract The main characteristics of spatial and temporal variability of the winter (June–August) observed surface air minimum temperature (SAMT) of southern Africa (Africa south of the equator) were
Temperature variability over Africa during the last 2000 years
A growing number of proxy, historical and instrumental data sets are now available from continental Africa through which past variations in temperature can be assessed. This paper, co-authored by
Twentieth-Century Climate Change over Africa: Seasonal Hydroclimate Trends and Sahara Desert Expansion
AbstractTwentieth-century trends in seasonal temperature and precipitation over the African continent are analyzed from observational datasets and historical climate simulations. Given the
Changes in temperature and precipitation extremes in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania
East Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions of Africa to extreme weather and climate events. Regional and local information on climate extremes is critical for monitoring and managing the
Recent changes in air temperature, heat waves occurrences, and atmospheric circulation in Northern Africa
This study documents the time evolution of air temperature and heat waves occurrences over Northern Africa for the period 1979–2011. A significant warming (1°–3°C), appearing by the mid‐1960s over
Trends and variability of temperature and evaporation over the African continent: Relationships with precipitation
This study analyzed changes in African long-term (1901–2015) Potential Evapo-Transpiration (PET), precipitation, minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperature. Correlation among precipitation, PET,
Climatic deviations across a transect of South Africa during El Niño and La Niña years
South Africa is a water-scarce country that is highly dependent on agriculture. This means that the local impacts of climate altering phenomenon, such as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), are

Global warming impacts leading to climate change is influencing all aspects of life and the ecosystems. Paris agreement capped the increase to a target below 2 °C and further downward trajectory to

Temperature Variability over South America
Abstract The variation of air temperature at 2 m above the earth’s surface in South America (SA) between 1948 and 2007 is investigated primarily using the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis. In December–February
Recent Trends of Minimum and Maximum Surface Temperatures over Eastern Africa
This study investigated recent trends in the mean surface minimum and maximum air temperatures over eastern Africa by use of both graphical and statistical techniques. Daily records for 71 stations
Surface Temperature Variations in East Africa and Possible Causes
Abstract Surface temperatures have been observed in East Africa for more than 100 yr, but heretofore have not been subject to a rigorous climate analysis. To pursue this goal monthly averages of
Evidence of trends in daily climate extremes over southern and west Africa
Received 31 May 2005; revised 10 January 2006; accepted 23 March 2006; published 21 July 2006. [1] There has been a paucity of information on trends in daily climate and climate extremes, especially
Change in the association between Indian Ocean sea‐surface temperatures and summer rainfall over South Africa and Namibia
The El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal in Indian Ocean sea-surface temperatures has weakened since the late-1970s, resulting in important changes in the association between tropical western
Temperature trends are examined for a variety of locations in South Africa. The long-term mean annual temperature record (1885 –1993) shows warming over the past century, with much of the warming
Variability of summer rainfall over tropical north Africa (1906–92): Observations and modelling
The nature and causes of seasonal (July to September (JAS)) rainfall variability over tropical north Africa are investigated using a combination of empirical and modelling approaches. Concentration
Relationships between South African rainfall and SST anomalies in the Southwest Indian Ocean
Previous work has indicated the importance of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Southwest Indian Ocean for rainfall variability over South Africa. Here, these links are further explored
Changes in temperature and precipitation extremes in western central Africa, Guinea Conakry, and Zimbabwe, 1955–2006
[1] Understanding how extremes are changing globally, regionally, and locally is an important first step for planning appropriate adaptation measures, as changes in extremes have major impacts. The
A Reanalysis of the MSU Channel 2 Tropospheric Temperature Record
Abstract Over the period from 1979 to 2001, tropospheric trends derived from a widely cited analysis of the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) temperature record show little or no warming, while surface
