We compute how threshold effects obtained by integrating out a heavy particle localized on a codimension-2 brane influence the properties of the brane and the bulk fields it sources in D = d+2 dimensions. We do so using a recently developed formalism for matching the characteristics of higher codimension branes to the properties of the bulk fields they source. We show that although the dominant heavy-mass dependence induced in the low-energy codimension-2 tension has the generic size expected…

PHENOMENOLOGY OF CODIMENSION-2 BRANE WORLDS: THE IMPORTANCE OF BACK-REACTION

In this thesis, we describe the properties of brane worlds embedded in a spacetime with two extra dimensions. We derive and describe the boundary conditions that branes impose on the bulk fields in

The consistency of codimension-2 braneworlds and their cosmology

We study axially symmetric codimension-2 cosmology for a distributional braneworld fueled by a localised four-dimensional perfect fluid, in a six-dimensional Lovelock theory. We argue that only the

Running with rugby balls: bulk renormalization of codimension-2 branes

A bstractWe compute how one-loop bulk effects renormalize both bulk and brane effective interactions for geometries sourced by codimension-two branes. We do so by explicitly integrating out

Accidental SUSY: enhanced bulk supersymmetry from brane back-reaction

A bstractWe compute how bulk loops renormalize both bulk and brane effective interactions for codimension-two branes in 6D gauged chiral supergravity, as functions of the brane tension and

Smooth tensionful higher-codimensional brane worlds with bulk and brane form fields

Completely regular tensionful codimension-n brane world solutions are discussed, where the core of the brane is chosen to be a thin codimension-(n − 1) shell in an infinite volume flat bulk, and an

Bulk axions, brane back-reaction and fluxes

Extra-dimensional models can involve bulk pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pGBs) whose shift symmetry is explicitly broken only by physics localized on branes. Reliable calculation of their low-energy

Physics of Strings and Extra Dimensions

The purpose of this thesis is twofold and motivated by recent developments in string theory and extra dimensional models. The first objective is to describe the development and progress in the

Codimension-2 brane–bulk matching: examples from six and ten dimensions

Experience with Randall–Sundrum models teaches the importance of following how branes back-react onto the bulk geometry, since this can dramatically affect the system's low-energy properties. Yet the

Bulk stabilization, the extra-dimensional Higgs portal and missing energy in Higgs events

A bstractTo solve the hierarchy problem, extra-dimensional models must explain why the new dimensions stabilize to the right size, and the known mechanisms for doing so require bulk scalars that

Effective field theories and matching for codimension-2 branes

This work identifies the classical matching conditions that relate the near-brane asymptotic behaviour of bulk fields to the low-energy effective actions describing how space-filling codimension-2 branes interact with the surrounding extra-dimensional bulk, and shows how these may be renormalized in a general way.

Gravity on codimension 2 brane worlds

The authors compute the matching conditions for a general thick codimension 2 brane, a necessary previous step towards the investigation of gravitational phenomena in co-dimension 2 braneworlds. They

The Effective field theory of codimension-two branes

Distributional sources of matter on codimension-two and higher branes are only well-defined as regularized objects. Nevertheless, intuition from effective field theory suggests that the low-energy

Bulk singularities and the effective cosmological constant for higher co-dimension branes

We study a general configuration of parallel branes having co-dimension ≥ 2 situated inside a compact d-dimensional bulk space within the framework of a scalar and flux field coupled to gravity in D

Supersymmetric codimension-two branes and U(1)R mediation in 6D gauged supergravity

We construct a consistent supersymmetric action for brane chiral and vector multiplets in a six-dimensional chiral gauged supergravity. A nonzero brane tension can be accommodated by allowing for a

Low energy effective theory on a regularized brane in 6D gauged chiral supergravity

We derive the low energy effective theory on a brane in six-dimensional chiral supergravity. The conical 3-brane singularities are resolved by introducing cylindrical 4-branes of co-dimension 1 whose

Pseudo-3-branes in a curved 6D bulk

A critical cosmological constant from millimeter extra dimensions

We consider `brane universe' scenarios with standard-model fields localized on a 3-brane in 6 spacetime dimensions. We show that if the spacetime is rotationally symmetric about the brane, local

Brane World in Arbitrary Dimensions Without Z_2 Symmetry

We consider a brane world in an arbitrary number of dimensions without Z_2 symmetry and derive the effective Einstein equation on the brane, where its right-hand side is given by the matter on the

Codimension-two branes in six-dimensional supergravity and the cosmological constant problem

We investigate in detail recent suggestions that codimension-two braneworlds in six-dimensional supergravity might circumvent Weinberg's no-go theorem for self-tuning of the cosmological constant.
