Context. We searched for Technetium (Tc) in a sample of bright oxygenrich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars located in the oute r galactic bulge. Tc is an unstable element synthesised via the s-proce ss in deep layers of AGB stars, thus it is a reliable indicator of both recent s-process activity and third dredge-up. Aims. We aim to test theoretical predictions on the luminosity lim it for the onset of third dredge-up. Methods. Using high resolution optical spectra obtained with the UVE S…

Understanding AGB evolution in Galactic bulge stars from high-resolution infrared spectroscopy
An analysis of high-resolution near-infrared spectra of a sample of 45 asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars towards the Galactic bulge is presented. The sample consists of two subsamples, a larger one
Interplay between pulsation, mass loss, and third dredge-up: More about Miras with and without technetium
Context. We follow-up on a previous finding that AGB Mira variables containing the third dredge-up indicator technetium (Tc) in their atmosphere form a different sequence of K − [22] colour as a
On the role of doubly-diffusive mixing in low-mass red giant branch stars
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate mixing in red-giant stars. Thanks particularly to the observations of globular clusters, it is clear that that standard stellar evolution fails to
Average neutron cross sections of Tc99
Tc99 has been the subject of several experimental programs at the JRC-Geel since the late 1990s. This work presents new transmission data measured at the GELINA facility with the time-of-flight
Starry Messages: Searching for Signatures of Interstellar Archaeology
Searching for signatures of cosmic-scale archaeological artifacts such as Dyson spheres or Kardashev civilizations is an interesting alternative to conventional SETI. Uncovering such an artifact does
The Relationship between Globular Cluster Mass, Metallicity, and Light-element Abundance Variations
We investigate aluminum abundance variations in the stellar populations of globular clusters using both literature measurements of sodium and aluminum and APOGEE measurements of nitrogen and aluminum

The Two Micron All Sky Survey
The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) will provide a uniform survey of the entire sky at three near-infrared wavebands: J (Aelf = 1.25/~m), H (Aell = 1.65#m), and K8 (A~II = 2.16#m). h major goal of
