IN 1937, Perrier and Segrè showed that radioactive isotopes of element 43 could be formed by neutron or deuteron bombardment of molybdenum1. Several chemical properties of element 43 were established at that time, and some nuclear properties of the spectral isotopes. These isotopes were found after nuclear bombardments by the 37-in. cyclotron of the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California.

The history of the discovered technetium is reviewed within the framework of the discovery and production of artificial radioactivity in the twentieth century and a detailed account is given of the steps taken.

### First Nuclear Reactions

The discovery by Rutherford in 1919 that $$\alpha$$-particles could induce nuclear reactions and transform isotopes and elements opened up the possibility to produce new isotopes in the laboratory.

### Newer Technetium-99m Radiopharmaceuticals

Just now, we are having the semicentenary of the discovery of the element 43, later on named “technetium” (1,2). In 1937, Perrier and Segre showed that radioactive isotopes of element 43 could be

Although the discovery of artificial radioactive elements with Z > 92 again depended on nucleosynthesis and radiological characterization, measurement of the frequencies or energies of characteristic X-rays remains the ultimate goal in proving the existence of an element.

### The first synthetic element

When Mendeleev proposed his periodic table in 1869, element 43 was unknown. In 1937, it became the first element to be discovered by synthesis in a laboratory — paving the way to the atomic age.The
