Technetium, the missing element

  title={Technetium, the missing element},
  author={F.A.A. de Jonge and Ernest K. J. Pauwels},
  journal={European Journal of Nuclear Medicine},
The history of the discovery of technetium is reviewed within the framework of the discovery and production of artificial radioactivity in the twentieth century. Important elements of this history are the accidental production of this element in a cyclotron in Berkeley, California, USA, a machine devised by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, and its subsequent discovery in 1937 by Carlo Perrier and Emilio Segrè in scrap metal parts sent by Lawrence to Palermo, Italy by mail. A detailed account is given…

Technetium: The First Radioelement on the Periodic Table

The radioactive nature of technetium is discussed using a combination of introductory nuclear physics concepts and empirical trends observed in the chart of the nuclides and the periodic table of the

A small muscle injury seems to alter the effect of adrenaline on skeletal muscle blood flow in a vasoconstrictory direction, indicating a vascular dysregulation in TE, which is likely to be of clinical significance by contributing to the development and maintenance of the chronic muscle pain in this large patient group.

Bone Scans Are Reliable for the Identification of Lumbar Disk and Facet Pathology

It is reasonable to use either conventional bone SPECT orBone SPECT-CT for the identification of disk pathology; however, bone SPect-CT is more reliable for facet joint pathology.

Blood Flow in Human Skeletal Muscle : The Effect of Adrenaline and the Influence of a Small Muscle Injury

A variety of vasoregulatory systems are involved in the complex control of blood flow inhuman skeletal muscle. The interaction between these systems where one system canoverride or modify the other

Technetium: The Element of Atomic Number 43

IN 1937, Perrier and Segrè showed that radioactive isotopes of element 43 could be formed by neutron or deuteron bombardment of molybdenum1. Several chemical properties of element 43 were established

Radioactive Isotopes of Element 43

PROF. E. O. LAWRENCE, of the University of California, gave us a plate of molybdenum which had been irradiated with deuterons in the Berkeley cyclotron. The plate showed a strong radioactivity due to

The search for technetium in nature

A historical accourt of element 43 is presented in four phases: (1) the searches and claims prior to its actual discovery in 1937; (2) its discovery and the preparation and identification of its

The Making of the Missing Chemical Elements

In the table given, the place of element 87 was filled by the symbol of a newly discovered branch product in the actinium series, but in the places of elements 43, 61, 85 and 93 no symbols were inserted, although, as explained in some detail, atoms of all these four elements had been artificially produced.

Artificial Production of a New Kind of Radio-Element

The latest experiments have shown a very striking fact: when an aluminium foil is irradiated on a polonium preparation, the emission of positrons does not cease immediately, when the active preparation is removed, as for an ordinary radio-element.

My career as a radioisotope hunter.

My career as a radioisotope hunter began when I was working as a young scientist in the Radiation Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, during the trailblazing years in the late
