Speciation often involves the evolution of incompatible gene interactions that cause sterility or lethality in hybrids between populations. These so-called hybrid incompatibilities occur between two or more functionally divergent loci. We show that the nucleoporin 160kDa (Nup160) gene of the fruitfly Drosophila simulans is incompatible with one or more factors on the D. melanogaster X chromosome, causing hybrid lethality. Nup160 encodes a nuclear pore complex protein and shows evidence of…

Darwinian Explanations of the Origin of Language

michelheijdra@gmail.com Since the publication 150 years ago of the Origin of Species, Darwin’s work has invaded many branches of science. However, those invasions remain a field of hefty debate. This

DISCUSSION PAPER: CHIMPANZEES AND LANGUAGE EVOLUTION

The relevance of chimpanzee performance to human language evolution is controversial, but may be somewhat easier to assess if the debate is framed in explicitly evolutionary terms so that behavioral reconstruction may follow established biological principles.

On Evolution and the Origin Language

From this evidence, it appears that the form of the human hand, the large area of the brain directly related to the hand, and the greatly expanded human cerebellum, all evolved long after initial tool use and in response to new selection pressures arising from the success of implements of many kinds.

Chimpanzees of the Lakeshore: Natural History and Culture at Mahale

Richly illustrated, the author blends anecdotes with powerful data to explore the fascinating world of the chimpanzees of the lakeshore, which reveals the complexity of social life, from male struggles for dominant status to female travails in raising offspring.

Rumbaugh chimpanzee and two bonobos A comparison of communication in a Pan : Semiotic combinations in

Communicative combinations of two bonobos (Pan paniscus) and a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) are compared. All three apes utilized ordering strategies for combining symbols (lexigrams) or a lexigram

Pre-Hunt Communication Provides Context for the Evolution of Early Human Language

It is argued that pre-hunt communication was the starting context of the evolution of human language and the complexity of this communication system increased as a response to the increased demand to coordinate group-hunting effort.

The Evolution of Language: A Comparative Review

It is concluded that comparative data from living animals will be key to developing a richer, more interdisciplinary understanding of the authors' most distinctively human trait: language.

Communication and Language in the Home-Raised Chimpanzee

Oral speech develops in the human infant as an outgrowth of his contact with older humans who are continuously using language. A deaf mute fails to speak because he never hears the acoustic patterns
