This study investigated the beliefs of tertiary teachers in Indonesia about the use of the students' mother tongue in learning English. In addition, it explored whether there were discrepancies between the teachers' beliefs and what they claimed to be their classroom practices. This study found out that the participants believed in the judicious use of L1 in the classroom.
