Retinoids exert their effect through ligand-dependent transcription factors, retinoic acid receptors (RARalpha, beta, and gamma) and retinoid X receptor (RXRalpha, beta, and gamma), which belong to the superfamily of steroid/thyroid/vitamin D3, nuclear receptors.
