Aspergillus section Clavati has been revised using morphology, secondary metabolites, physiological characters and DNA sequences. [] Key Result Phylogenetic analysis of beta-tubulin, ITS and calmodulin sequence data indicated that Aspergillus section Clavati includes 6 species, A. clavatus (synonyms: A. apicalis, A. pallidus), A. giganteus, A. rhizopodus, A. longivesica, Neocarpenteles acanthosporus and A. clavatonanicus. Neocarpenteles acanthosporus is the only known teleomorph of this section.

Figures and Tables from this paper

Two new aflatoxin producing species, and an overview of Aspergillus section Flavi

Aspergillus subgenus Circumdati section Flavi includes species with usually biseriate conidial heads, in shades of yellow-green to brown, and dark sclerotia. Several species assigned to this section

Aspergillus sect. Aeni sect. nov., a new section of the genus for A. karnatakaensis sp. nov. and some allied fungi

The new species Aspergillus karnatakaensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated. All three isolates of this species were isolated from Indian soil; two from soil under a coconut palm in a coffee

New species in Aspergillus section Terrei

Section Terrei of Aspergillus was studied using a polyphasic approach including sequence analysis of parts of the β-tubulin and calmodulin genes and the ITS region, macro- and micromorphological

A Phylogenetic Analysis of Greek Isolates of Aspergillus Species Based on Morphology and Nuclear and Mitochondrial Gene Sequences

The combined use of the three commonly employed nuclear genes (benA, rpb2, and ITS), the IGS region, and two less often used mitochondrial gene sequences as a single unit resolved several taxonomic ambiguities.

Aspergillus affinis sp. nov., a novel ochratoxin A-producing Aspergillus species (section Circumdati) isolated from decomposing leaves.

The analysis of the rRNA regions and of the benA and cmd sequence data indicated that the two isogenic isolates belonged to a genetically distinct OTA-producing species of the genus Aspergillus, which appeared to be very closely related to A. cretensis.

Identification and nomenclature of the genus Penicillium

New and revisited species in Aspergillus section Nigri

The data indicate that only molecular approaches including sequence analysis of calmodulin or β-tubulin genes, AFLP analysis, UP-PCR analysis or mtDNA RFLP analysis can be used reliably to distinguish these sibling species.

Mycotoxin production and evolutionary relationships among species of Aspergillus section Clavati.

Correlations were not observed between either patulin or ribotoxin production, and the taxonomic position of the isolates tested, indicating that patulin and ribotoxins producing abilities were lost several times during evolution of Aspergillus section Clavati.

Novel Neosartorya species isolated from soil in Korea.

Two separate groups are distinguished and are proposed as novel species of Neosartorya spinosa and related taxa based on partial beta-tubulin and calmodulin gene sequences and ascospore morphology.

Production of mycotoxins by Aspergillus lentulus and other medically important and closely related species in section Fumigati.

The fact that Aspergillus lentulus apparently does not produce gliot toxin supports the idea that other compounds than gliotoxin might play an important role in the effective invasiveness of A. lentulus.
