Carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4) has been found to induce cellular damage by generating oxygen free radicals. A study was carried out to investigate the effects of taurine (extracted from Pegasus laternarius Cuvier) on CCl 4 intoxicated cultured neurons. CCl 4 application (0.4 mmol.l -1, 0.8 mmol.l -1, 1.2 mmol.l -1 and 1.6 mmol.l -1) increased the lipid peroxidation product and decreased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity significantly in a concentration dependent man- ner. Pretreatment of… Expand
Cadmium‐induced neurological disorders: prophylactic role of taurine
TLDR
Taurine plays a beneficial role against Cd‐induced cerebral oxidative stress and could prevent the reduction in the in vivo antioxidant power linearly up to a dose of 100 mg kg−1 body weight. Expand
Protection effect of taurine on nitrosative stress in the mice brain with chronic exposure to arsenic
TLDR
Co-administration of arsenic and taurine can alleviate DNA damage of brain neurons caused by arsenic through the RNS signal pathway, and may be the major target cells of arsenic neurotoxicity. Expand
Comparison of taurine and pantoyltaurine as antioxidants in vitro and in the central nervous system of diabetic rats.
TLDR
Comparisons of the results for spinal cord and for brain parts such as the cerebellum, cortex and brain stem suggested the existence of regional differences in antioxidant potency between TAU and PTAU, especially in terms of antioxidant enzymes. Expand
Taurine inhibits oxidative damage and prevents fibrosis in carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis.
TLDR
Oral t aurine administration enhances hepatic taurine accumulation, reduces oxidative stress and prevents progression of hepatic fibrosis in CCl4-induced HD rats, as well as inhibits transformation of the HSC. Expand
TAURINE CYTOPROTECTION: FROM CELL TO SYSTEM
Taurine affects the two major causes of cellular toxicity, namely, Ca overload and oxidative stress. Often, the beneficial effects of taurine have been attributed to both an improvement in oxidativeExpand
Neuroprotective Effects of Active Ingredients Isolated from Pegasus laternarius on Cultured Cerebral Neurons
TLDR
The results suggest that the active ingredients obtained from Pegasus laternarius have potential neuroprotective effects on injured neurons by promoting the outgrowth of cultured neurons, increasing the activity of intracellular antioxidants, and exerting antiapoptotic effects. Expand
Why is taurine cytoprotective?
TLDR
The aim of this review is to discuss the importance of each factor in the cytoprotective actions of taurine, including osmotic stress, oxidative stress, conjugation and regulation of [Ca2+]i. Expand
The protective effect of taurine against hepatic damage in a model of liver disease and hepatic stellate cells.
Taurine plays a protective role against free radicals and toxins in various cells and tissues. However, the effect of taurine on hepatic injury and fibrosis developed by activated hepatic stellateExpand
The Protective Effect of Pomegranate ( Punica granatum ) Juice against Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Oxidative Stress in Brain Tissue of Adult Male Albino Rats
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum, P.g.) juice on the oxidation state of the brain tissue of adult male albino rats and whether P.g. juiceExpand
Mechanism of the protective action of taurine in toxin and drug induced organ pathophysiology and diabetic complications: a review.
TLDR
This review summarizes the mechanism of the prophylactic role of taurine against several environmental toxins and drug-induced organ pathophysiology and diabetes. Expand

4-Hydroxynonenal and malondialdehyde hepatic protein adducts in rats treated with carbon tetrachloride: immunochemical detection and lobular localization.
TLDR
Results demonstrate that 4-HNE and MDA alkylate specific hepatic proteins in a time-dependent manner, which appears to be associated with hepatocellular injury following CCl(4) exposure. Expand
[The antioxidant action of taurine in acute hypoxic hypoxia].
TLDR
It was found that preliminary treatment by amino acid taurine protected rats from lipid peroxidation intensification in the liver, brain and heart under acute severe normobaric hypoxic hypoxia. Expand
Differential effect of carbon tetrachloride on the cell membranes of neurons and astrocytes.
TLDR
The results from this study may indicate that the mechanism of action of CCl4 is different in neurons and astrocytes, and that neurons, in contrast to astroCytes, show a concentration-dependent increase in lipid peroxidation. Expand
Assay for lipid peroxides in animal tissues by thiobarbituric acid reaction.
TLDR
Using this method, the liped peroxide level in the liver of rats suffering from carbon tetrachloride intoxication was investigated and was in good agreement with previously reported data obtained by measuring diene content. Expand
Taurine can ameliorate inflammatory bowel disease in rats.
TLDR
Results suggest that administration of taurine reduced the inflammatory parameters in this rat model of IBD by increasing the defenses against oxidative insult. Expand

TLDR
Taurine inhibits lipid peroxidation and decreases blood TG and LDL-chol levels, however, the time and dose of taurine supplementation are variables that need to be considered in the treatment of diabetes. Expand

Effects of taurine on ozone-induced memory deficits and lipid peroxidation levels in brains of young, mature, and old rats.
TLDR
Results show both an impairment in short-term and long-term memory with ozone and an improvement with taurine after ozone exposure, depending on age, and in contrast to young rats, old rats showed peroxidation in all control groups and a improvement in memory with t aurine. Expand
Importance of Se-glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and Cu/Zn-SOD for cell survival against oxidative stress.
TLDR
Comparing the efficiency of three different antioxidant enzymes: Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, catalase, and selenium-glutathione peroxidase shows that all three antioxidant enzymes give protection for the cells, and emphasizes the fact that each enzyme has a specific as well as an irreplaceable function.
