A very large repetitive element (StarkB, 22.8 kb) is present in the maize B chromosome, presumably not organized as tandem arrays. Results of the current study are contrary to this notion. Out of eighteen StarkB-carrying sequences, nine were the expected internal fragment of StarkB, and nine others were fragments spanning two StarkB elements.
