Tallaght: The Planning and Development of an Irish New Town

Abstract

Introduction This paper reviews the development of Tallaght, one of three new towns developed to the west of Dublin. II explores the new-town planning and development process, drawing comparisons between the manner in which the post-war new-towns development programme was undertaken in the United Kingdom. It highlights in particular the limited degree of control over the character and phasing of development which derived from an ovenvhelming reliance upon the private sector through promoting and facili tating development rather than its being actively undertaken by the public sector itself.
