In Forms of Talk, Goffman presents five essays written between 1974 and 1980, all of which reflect the importance he places on language use in face-to-face (or face-to-imagined-face) interaction. The essays focus both on talk as a general phe? nomenon, as well as different, specific "types of talk." The emphasis is on analyzing the ways a "speaker' ' manages utterances for listeners and potential lis? teners.
