}Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) is 3-4m long and is thus smaller than Taenia saginata. The scolex has a rostellum armed with two rows of hooks in addition to the four suckers. Inside the gravid segments, the number of lateral uterus branches is usually 7-13 (see fig.). The proglottids at the posterior end of the chain are longer than wide and each contains a treelike branched uterus containing 80.000-100.000 eggs. The eggs are released when a proglottid detaches from the tapeworm in the…

The application of vaccination with TSOL18 recombinant vaccine along with oral medication of oxfendazole can reduces the transmission by pigs whereas use of niclosamide is found effective in humans, Hence the use of medication eventually reduces the incidence of neurocysticercosis in human and procine cysticERCosis in pigs.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto: silencing of thioredoxin peroxidase impairs the differentiation of protoscoleces into metacestodes
- BiologyParasite
- 2018
In vivo experiments showed that injecting mice intraperitoneally with protoscoleces treated with siRNA-3 resulted in a significant reduction in the number, size and weight of CE cysts compared with those of control animals, indicating that EgTPx is an important factor for protos coleces survival and plays an important role in the antioxidant defence against the host during development.
Cellular immune response in intraventricular experimental neurocysticercosis
- Biology, MedicineParasitology
- 2015
The systemic immune response showed a significant increase in all the analysed cytokines and predominance of the Th2 immune profile cytokines at the end of the infection, indicating that the location of the cysticerci may lead to ventriculomegaly.
Metformin Suppresses Development of the Echinococcus multilocularis Larval Stage by Targeting the TOR Pathway
- Biology, MedicineAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy

The presence of the key lysosomal pathway components, through which metformin reportedly acts, was confirmed in the parasite and suggest that Em-TOR is part of the parasite’s insulin signaling pathway.

This review focuses on recent insights from transcriptome studies, the expression patterns of miRNAs and lncRNAs, and miRNA-related databases and techniques that are used to investigate mi RNAs in Echinococcus and echinococcosis, and provides new avenues for screening therapeutic and diagnostic markers.
A myxozoan genome reveals mosaic evolution in a parasitic cnidarian
- BiologyBMC biology
- 2022
The found evidence of mosaic genome evolution in the cnidarian Myxobolus honghuensis, a myxozoan parasite of fish, with extremely simple morphology, illustrates that myxozoans are not as genetically simple as previously regarded, and the evolution of some myXozoans is driven by both genomic streamlining and expansion.
Mycobacterium smegmatis synthesizes in vitro androgens and estrogens from different steroid precursors.
- Biology, MedicineCanadian journal of microbiology
- 2015
The ability to transform less potent sex steroids like androstenedione and estrone into other more active steroids like testosterone and estradiol or vice versa suggests that M. smegmatis can influence the amount of self-synthesized strong androgens and estrogens and can transform those found in the environment.
