We present the kinematical properties, distribution of spectroscopic subtypes, and stellar population subcomponents of the white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. We find no convincing evidence of halo white dwarfs in the total 20 pc sample of 129 white dwarfs nor is there convincing evidence of genuine thick disk subcomponent members within 20 parsecs. Virtually, the entire 20 pc sample likely belongs to the thin disk. The total DA to non-DA ratio of the 20 pc sample is 1.6, a manifestation of…

THE WHITE DWARFS WITHIN 25 pc OF THE SUN: KINEMATICS AND SPECTROSCOPIC SUBTYPES
We present the fractional distribution of spectroscopic subtypes, range and distribution of surface temperatures, and kinematical properties of the white dwarfs (WDs) within 25 pc of the Sun. There
The 25 Parsec Local White Dwarf Population
We have extended our detailed survey of the local white dwarf population from 20 pc to 25 pc, effectively doubling the sample volume, which now includes 232 stars. In the process new stars within 20
The kinematics of the white dwarf population from the SDSS DR12
Abstract We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, which is the largest available white dwarf catalog to date, to study the evolution of the kinematical properties of the population of
TOWARD A SPECTROSCOPIC CENSUS OF WHITE DWARFS WITHIN 40 pc OF THE SUN
We present the preliminary results of a survey aimed at significantly increasing the range and completeness of the local census of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs. The current census of
Gaia white dwarfs within 40 pc II: the volume-limited Northern hemisphere sample
We present an overview of the sample of northern hemisphere white dwarfs within 40 pc of the Sun detected from $Gaia$ Data Release 2 (DR2). We find that 521 sources are spectroscopically confirmed
THE MERGER RATE OF BINARY WHITE DWARFS IN THE GALACTIC DISK
We use multi-epoch spectroscopy of ∼4000 white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to constrain the properties of the Galactic population of binary white dwarf systems and calculate their merger
The white dwarf luminosity function
The Gaia 20 pc white dwarf sample
Using Gaia DR2 data, we present an up-to-date sample of white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. In total we identified 139 systems in Gaia DR2, nine of which are new detections, with the closest of
A Spectroscopic Search for White Dwarf Companions to 101 Nearby M Dwarfs
Recent studies of the stellar population in the solar neighborhood (<20 pc) suggest that there are undetected white dwarfs (WDs) in multiple systems with main-sequence companions. Detecting these
The field white dwarf mass distribution
We revisit the properties and astrophysical implications of the field white dwarf mass distribution in preparation of Gaia applications. Our study is based on the two samples with the best

A Determination of the Local Density of White Dwarf Stars
The most recent version of the Catalog of Spectroscopically Identified White Dwarfs lists 2249 white dwarf stars. Among these stars are 109 white dwarfs that have either reliable trigonometric
The Parentage of Magnetic White Dwarfs: Implications from Their Space Motions
We have examined the statistical properties, cooling ages, and vector components of the three‐dimensional space motion U, V, W for the enlarged sample of 53 magnetic white dwarfs contained in the
Wide Binary Systems and the Nature of High-Velocity White Dwarfs
We present measured radial velocities and complete space motions for 116 white dwarf stars with M dwarf companions. Thirteen pairs have "halo-like" velocities. According to a recent study by
A NEW LOOK AT THE LOCAL WHITE DWARF POPULATION
We have conducted a detailed new survey of the local population of white dwarfs lying within 20 pc of the Sun. A new revised catalog of local white dwarfs containing 122 entries (126 individual
Limits on the Halo White Dwarf Component of Baryonic Dark Matter from the Hubble Deep Field
The MACHO collaboration lensing event statistics suggest that a significant fraction of the dark Galactic halo can be comprised of baryonic matter in the form of white dwarf stars with masses between
Spectroscopic Identification of Cool White Dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood
The New Luyten Two-Tenths catalog contains a large number of high proper motion white dwarf candidates that remain to be spectroscopically confirmed. We present new spectroscopic observations, as
3D kinematics of white dwarfs from the SPY project
We present kinematics of a sample of 107 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) and discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk, and halo
A lower limit of 9.5 Gyr on the age of the Galactic disk from the oldest white dwarf stars
WHITE dwarf stars represent the final evolutionary state for most main-sequence stars. They cool slowly enough that even the oldest white dwarfs are still observable in sufficiently deep surveys and
The Solar Neighborhood. XIX. Discovery and Characterization of 33 New Nearby White Dwarf Systems
We present spectra for 33 previously unclassified white dwarf systems brighter than V = 17, primarily in the southern hemisphere. Of these new systems, 26 are DA, 4 are DC, 2 are DZ, and 1 is DQ. We
