In a number of Balkan languages (Romanian, Bulgarian and Albanian) the definite article may be realized as a suffix on the noun or on a prenominal adjective. This phenomenon raises fundamental questions regarding the analysis of the functional category Det(erminer) and its relation to the lexical category N(oun), which are comparable to those regarding the relation between Tense and Verbs, which is one of the domains in which generative studies have achieved noteworthy progress.
