The mechanical properties and structure of cactus Opuntia ficus-indica spines were characterised in bending and by means of x-ray diffraction. Using spruce wood cell walls for reference, the modulus of elasticity of Opuntia cactus spines was high in absolute terms, but comparable when specific values were considered, which can be explained by similarities in the cell wall structure of both materials. Differently from the modulus of elasticity, the bending strength of cactus spines was…

Structural and mechanical properties of the spines from Echinocactus grusonii cactus

It is intuitional that most cactus spines are hard and sharp, but their structures and properties have never been systematically studied. Here, we report a comprehensive study on the microstructures

Microstructures and mechanical properties of fiber cells from Echinocactus grusonii cactus spine

Spine is the sharpest and hardest part of many plants, which contains highly aligned fiber cells. Here, we report the microstructures and mechanical properties as well as their correlation of single

Spines of the porcupine fi sh : Structure , composition , and mechanical properties

This paper explores the structure, composition, and mechanical properties of porcupine fish spines for the first time. The spine was found to be composed of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite, protein

Preparation, Characterization, and Biological Features of Cactus Coated Bacterial Cellulose Hydrogels

The current study was aimed at developing BC-Cactus (BCC) composite hydrogels with impressive mechanical features for their potential applications in medical and environmental sectors. BCC composites

Chemical and Physical Defense Traits in Two Sexual Forms of Opuntia robusta in Central Eastern Mexico

Study of a gynodioecious population of Opuntia robusta from Central-Eastern Mexico found that hermaphrodites had a higher seed output and more spines per areola than females and that their spines contained less moisture.

Arabinan-cellulose composite in Opuntia ficus-indica prickly pear spines.

Changes in the molecular orientation and tensile properties of uniaxially drawn cellulose films.

The mechanical properties of wet-drawn films are competitive with regard to cellophane and melt-blown cellulose films, particularly considering their high modulus of elasticity of up to 26 GPa, which is also comparable to values obtained for industrially produced cellulose fibers.

SAGUARO SPINE PENETRATED BIGHORN SHEEP SKULL

Animals that inhabit vegetative communities where thorns and spines are common should be capable of moving while avoiding injury from thorns, and it is likely that the animal collided with a saguaro cactus after she became blinded by disease.

Cactus skin injuries.

A 54-year-old Caucasian woman who presented for treatment of painful cactus spine granulomas on her right hand was treated withroofing the granulomatous papules and removing the cacti spine fragments under a dissecting microscope, and subsequent soaking in an antibacterial solution resulted in rapid resolution of the granumatous lesions.

The tensile strength of polymer fibres

A theory of the tensile strength of oriented polymer fibres is presented. From an analysis of the observed fracture envelope it is shown that the criterion for fracture of the fibre is either a
