Cosmological simulations indicate that cold dark matter (CDM) halos should be triaxial. Validating this theoretical prediction is, however, less than straightforward because the assembly of galaxies is expected to modify halo shapes and to render them more axisymmetric. We use a suite of N-body simulations to quantitatively investigate the effect of the growth of a central disk galaxy on the shape of triaxial dark matter halos. In most circumstances, the halo responds to the presence of the…

We present new limits on the global shape of the dark matter halo in the Andromeda galaxy using and generalizing non-spherical mass models developed by Hayashi & Chiba and compare our results with
Dark matter halo shapes in the Auriga simulations
We present shape measurements of Milky Way–sized dark matter haloes at redshift z = 0 in a suite of 30 zoom simulations from the Auriga project. We compare the results in full magnetohydrodynamics
Stellar discs in Aquarius dark matter haloes
We investigate the gravitational interactions between live stellar disks and their dark matter halos, using CDM haloes similar in mass to that of the Milky Way taken from the Aquarius Project. We
The impact of baryons on the direct detection of dark matter
The spatial and velocity distributions of dark matter particles in the Milky Way Halo affect the signals expected to be observed in searches for dark matter. Results from direct detection experiments
Bars in dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy discs.
We study the shape and kinematics of simulated dwarf galaxy discs in the APOSTLE suite of Lambda cold dark matter (Lambda CDM) cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We find that a large fraction
Interaction between collisionless galactic discs and non-axisymmetric dark matter haloes
Using $N$-body simulations ($N\sim 10^6 - 10^7$), we examine how a non-axisymmetric dark halo affects the dynamical evolution of the structure in collisionless (stellar) discs. We demonstrate how the
HALO ORBITS IN COSMOLOGICAL DISK GALAXIES: TRACERS OF FORMATION HISTORY
We analyze the orbits of stars and dark matter particles in the halo of a disk galaxy formed in a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. The halo is oblate within the inner {approx}20 kpc and
Halo shapes from weak lensing: the impact of galaxy–halo misalignment
We analyse the impact of galaxy–halo misalignment on the ability of weak lensing studies to constrain the shape of dark matter haloes, using a combination of the Millennium dark matter N-body
THE IMPACT OF BARYON PHYSICS ON THE STRUCTURE OF HIGH-REDSHIFT GALAXIES
We study the detailed structure of galaxies at redshifts z {>=} 2 using cosmological simulations with improved modeling of the interstellar medium and star formation. The simulations follow the
DO BARYONS ALTER THE HALOS OF LOW SURFACE BRIGHTNESS GALAXIES
High-quality observations of dark-matter-dominated low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies indicate that, in contrast to the triaxial, centrally concentrated cuspy halos formed in collisionless

The Causes of Halo Shape Changes Induced by Cooling Baryons: Disks versus Substructures
Cold dark matter cosmogony predicts triaxial dark matter halos, whereas observations find quite round halos. This is most likely due to the condensation of baryons leading to rounder halos. We
The shape of the gravitational potential in cold dark matter haloes
We use a set of cosmological N-body simulations to investigate the structural shape of galaxysized cold dark matter (CDM) haloes. Unlike most previous work on the subject ‐ which dealt with shapes as
The Structure of cold dark matter halos
High resolution N-body simulations show that the density profiles of dark matter halos formed in the standard CDM cosmogony can be fit accurately by scaling a simple “universal” profile. Regardless
The Effect of Gas Cooling on the Shapes of Dark Matter Halos
We analyze the effect of dissipation on the shapes of dark matter (DM) halos using high-resolution cosmological gasdynamics simulations of clusters and galaxies in the ΛCDM cosmology. We find that
Growing Live Disks within Cosmologically Assembling Asymmetric Halos: Washing Out the Halo Prolateness
We study the growth of galactic disks in live triaxial dark matter (DM) halos. The halos have been assembled using the constrained realizations method and evolved from the linear regime using
Internal Alignment of the Halos of Disk Galaxies in Cosmological Hydrodynamic Simulations
Seven cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of disk galaxy formation are analyzed to determine the alignment of the disk within the dark matter halo and the internal structure of the halo. We find
The spin and shape of dark matter haloes in the Millennium simulation of a Λ cold dark matter universe
We investigate the spins and shapes of over a million dark matter haloes identified at z = 0 in the Millennium simulation. Our sample spans halo masses ranging from dwarf galaxies to rich galaxy
Is the dark halo of our Galaxy spherical
It has been recently claimed that the confined structure of the debris from the Sagittarius dwarf implies that the dark matter halo of our Galaxy should be nearly spherical, in strong contrast with
THE EFFECT OF DISSIPATION ON THE SHAPES OF DARK HALOS
The dissipative infall of gas during the formation of a galaxy modifies the density profile and shape of the dark halo. Gas dissipates energy radiatively and sinks to the center of the dark halo
Hiding cusps in cores: kinematics of disc galaxies in triaxial dark matter haloes
We study the kinematics of gaseous discs in triaxial dark matter haloes using the closed-loop orbit solutions in non-axisymmetric potentials. The orbits are in general non-circular and, for a given
