We examine the distribution of axis ratios of a large sample of disk galaxies hosting type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and compare it with a well-defined control sample of non-active galaxies. We find them significantly different, where the type 2 AGNs show both an excess of edge-on objects and deficit of round objects. This systematical bias cannot be explained by a nuclear obscurer oriented randomly with respect to the stellar disk. However, a… Expand

The Tilt between Acretion Disk and Stellar Disk
The orientations of the accretion disk of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the stellar disk of its host galaxy are both determined by the angular momentum of their forming gas, but on very differentExpand
The origins of active galactic nuclei obscuration: the ‘torus’ as a dynamical, unstable driver of accretion
Recent multiscale simulations have made it possible to follow gas inflows responsible for high-Eddington ratio accretion on to massive black holes (BHs) from galactic scales to the BH accretion disc.Expand
Why are active galactic nuclei and host galaxies misaligned
It is well established observationally that the characteristic angular momentum axis on small scales around active galactic nuclei (AGN), traced by radio jets and the putative torus, is not wellExpand
Are there reliable methods to estimate the nuclear orientation of Seyfert galaxies
Orientation, together with accretion and evolution, is one of the three main drivers in the Grand Unification of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Being unresolved, determining the true inclination ofExpand
The intrinsic shape of galaxies in SDSS/Galaxy Zoo
By modelling the axis ratio distribution of SDSS DR8 galaxies we find the intrinsic 3D shapes of spirals and ellipticals. We use morphological information from the Galaxy Zoo project and assume aExpand
DOUBLE-PEAKED NARROW EMISSION-LINE GALAXIES FROM THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY. I. SAMPLE AND BASIC PROPERTIES
Recently, much attention has been paid to double-peaked narrow emission-line (NEL) galaxies, some of which are suggested to be related to merging galaxies. We make a systematic search to build theExpand
Why Are AGN and Host Galaxies Misaligned
It is well-established observationally that the characteristic angular momentum axis on small scales around AGN, traced by radio jets and the putative torus, is not well-correlated with theExpand
The effects of environment on the intrinsic shape of galaxies
We measure the effect of the environment on the intrinsic shapes of spiral and elliptical galaxies by finding the 3D shape distribution and dust extinction that fits better the projected shape ofExpand
Unveiling the nucleus of NGC 7172
Aims. We present the results of near-infrared (NIR) H+K European Southern Observatory SINFONI integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7172. We investigate the central 800 pc,Expand
Evolution of Warped Accretion Disks in Active Galactic Nuclei. I. Roles of Feeding at the Outer Boundaries
We investigate the alignment processes of spinning black holes and their surrounding warped accretion disks in a frame of two different types of feeding at the outer boundaries. We consider (1) fixedExpand

The luminosity dependence of the type 1 active galactic nucleus fraction
Using a complete, magnitude-limited sample of active galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we show that the fraction of broad-line (type 1) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) increases withExpand
The host galaxies of active galactic nuclei
We examine the properties of the host galaxies of 22 623 narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) with 0.02 < z < 0.3 selected from a complete sample of 122 808 galaxies from the Sloan Digital SkyExpand
Obscuration in the Host Galaxies of Soft X-Ray-selected Seyfert Nuclei
We define a new sample of 96 low-redshift (z < 0.1), soft X-ray-selected Seyfert galaxies from the catalog of the Einstein Slew Survey. We probe the geometry and column depth of obscuring material inExpand

Here we present the study of the relative angle between the accretion disk (or radio jet) and the galaxy disk for a sample of Seyfert galaxies selected from a mostly isotropic property, the 60 μmExpand
Inclination effects on the recognition of Seyfert galaxies
Axial ratios have been measured from images of 91 Seyfert galaxies thought to be disk systems, and their distribution as a function of axial ratio compared to that of field spirals similarlyExpand

A Survey of Kiloparsec-Scale Radio Outflows in Radio-Quiet Active Galactic Nuclei
Seyfert galaxies commonly host compact jets spanning 10-100 pc scales, but larger structures are resolved out in long-baseline aperture synthesis surveys. Previous, targeted studies showed thatExpand
Unified models for active galactic nuclei and quasars
Because the critical central regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and quasars are strongly nonspherical but spatially unresolved, orientation effects have been the source of much confusion. InExpand
The Ellipticity of the Disks of Spiral Galaxies
The disks of spiral galaxies are generally elliptical rather than circular. The distribution of ellipticities can be fitted with a lognormal distribution. For a sample of 12,764 galaxies from theExpand
A Census of X-ray Nuclear Activity in Nearby Galaxies
We have studied the X-ray nuclear activity of 187 nearby (distance less than 15 Mpc) galaxies observed with Chandra/ACIS. We found that 86 of them have a pointlike X-ray core, consistent with anExpand
