THE OCCURENCE OF RHEUMATOID FACTOR IN ASSOCIATION WITH ANTIBODY RESPONSE TO INFLUENZA A2(ASIAN) VIRUS.
@article{Svec1965THEOO, title={THE OCCURENCE OF RHEUMATOID FACTOR IN ASSOCIATION WITH ANTIBODY RESPONSE TO INFLUENZA A2(ASIAN) VIRUS.}, author={Kathryn H. Svec and John H. Dingle}, journal={Arthritis and rheumatism}, year={1965}, volume={8}, pages={ 524-9 } }
Analysis of sera from persons exposed to the 1957 Asian influenza epidemic demonstrated the appearance of rheumatoid factor in 14.8 per cent of 27 post-epidemic sera showing viral antibody response and in only 1.3 per cent of 79 corresponding sera which did not show viral antibody response. The factor was associated with either clinical infection or vaccination. Rheumatoid factor activity was demonstrated in both the latex FII agglutination and sensitized sheep cell tests and was abolished by…

Rheumatoid factor is present in significant numbers of older individuals having degenerative diseases: 30% of 235 patients with an average age of 71 years (excluding those with tuberculosis, syphilis, lung disease, and sarcoidosis) were Hu FII positive; among these, 64% of those with Parkinsonism, 47% of Those with diabetes mellitus, and 17% ofThose with arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease were seropositive.

The current findings provide further evidence that individuals unexposed to HIV-1 may develop immunologic resistance by alternative mechanisms, possibly including molecular mimicry, or exposure to as yet unidentified retroviruses.
