We use Chandra X-ray observations of the hot gas in and around NGC 6868 and NGC 6861 in the Telescopium galaxy group (AS0851) to probe the interaction history between these galaxies. Mean surface brightness profiles for NGC 6868 and NGC 6861 are each well described by double β-models, suggesting that they are each the dominant galaxy in a galaxy subgroup about to merge. Surface brightness and temperature maps of the brightest group galaxy NGC 6868 show a cold front edge ∼23 kpc to the north…

DEEP CHANDRA OBSERVATIONS OF EDGES AND BUBBLES IN THE NGC 5846 GALAXY GROUP

We use a combined 120 ks Chandra exposure to analyze X-ray edges produced by non-hydrostatic gas motions (sloshing) from galaxy collisions, and cavities formed by active galactic nucleus (AGN)

Revealing a Head-on Major Merger in the Nearby NGC 6338 Group with Chandra and VLA Observations

By analyzing the Chandra archival data of the nearby NGC 6338 galaxy group, we identify two X-ray bright clumps (N-clump and S-clump) within the central kpc, and detect an arc-like X-ray brightness

Building a cluster: shocks, cavities, and cooling filaments in the group–group merger NGC 6338

We present deep Chandra, XMM–Newton, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, and Hα observations of the group–group merger NGC 6338. X-ray imaging and spectral mapping show that as well as trailing tails

The bow shock, cold fronts and disintegrating cool core in the merging galaxy group RX J0751.3+5012

We present a new Chandra X-ray observation of the off-axis galaxy group merger RX J0751.3+5012. The hot atmospheres of the two colliding groups appear highly distorted by the merger. The images

Cooling in the X-ray halo of the rotating, massive early-type galaxy NGC 7049

The relative importance of the physical processes shaping the thermodynamics of the hot gas permeating rotating, massive early-type galaxies is expected to be different from that in non-rotating

SLOSHING GAS IN THE CORE OF THE MOST LUMINOUS GALAXY CLUSTER RXJ1347.5-1145

We present new constraints on the merger history of the most X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies, RXJ1347.5-1145, based on its unique multiwavelength morphology. Our X-ray analysis confirms that the

The origin of cold gas in giant elliptical galaxies and its role in fuelling radio-mode AGN feedback

The nature and origin of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) in early-type galaxies are still a matter of debate, and understanding the role of this component in galaxy evolution and in fuelling the

FRONTIER FIELDS CLUSTERS: CHANDRA AND JVLA VIEW OF THE PRE-MERGING CLUSTER MACS J0416.1-2403

Merging galaxy clusters leave long-lasting signatures on the baryonic and non-baryonic cluster constituents, including shock fronts, cold fronts, X-ray substructure, radio halos, and offsets between

Feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei in Galaxy Groups

The co-evolution between supermassive black holes and their environment is most directly traced by the hot atmospheres of dark matter halos. The cooling of the hot atmosphere supplies the central

IRREGULAR SLOSHING COLD FRONTS IN THE NEARBY MERGING GROUPS NGC 7618 AND UGC 12491: EVIDENCE FOR KELVIN–HELMHOLTZ INSTABILITIES

We present results from two ∼30 ks Chandra observations of the hot atmospheres of the merging galaxy groups centered around NGC 7618 and UGC 12491. Our images show the presence of arc-like sloshing

We present results from Chandra observations of the galaxy pair and associated galaxy group NGC 5098, and find evidence for both gas sloshing and active galactic nucleus (AGN) heating. The X-ray

DEEP CHANDRA OBSERVATIONS OF EDGES AND BUBBLES IN THE NGC 5846 GALAXY GROUP

Infall of the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 1404 into the Fornax Cluster

We use three Chandra observations, totaling 134.3 ks, to constrain the dynamical motion of NGC 1404 falling toward the dominant elliptical NGC 1399 through the Fornax Cluster gas. The surface

A MULTIWAVELENGTH VIEW OF STAR FORMATION IN INTERACTING GALAXIES IN THE PAVO GROUP

We combine Spitzer Infrared Array Camera mid-infrared and Chandra X-ray observations of the dominant galaxies NGC 6872 and NGC 6876 in the Pavo group with archival optical and H i data to study

CHANDRA OBSERVATIONS OF GAS STRIPPING IN THE ELLIPTICAL GALAXY NGC 4552 IN THE VIRGO CLUSTER

We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study ram pressure stripping in NGC 4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show a sharp leading edge in

X-Ray Constraints on Galaxy-Gas-Jet Interactions in the Dumbbell Galaxies NGC 4782 and NGC 4783 in the LGG 316 Galaxy Group

The unusual morphology of the intragroup medium in NGC 5171

We present the results of a 24-ks XMM-Newton observation of the NGC 5171 group of galaxies. NGC 5171 is unusual in that it is an X-ray bright group (L X > 10 42 erg s -1 ), with irregular contours
