Molecular studies of drought stress in plants use a variety of strategies and include different species subjected to a wide range of water deficits. Initial research has by necessity been largely descriptive, and relevant genes have been identified either by reference to physiological evidence or by differential screening. A large number of genes with a potential role in drought tolerance have been described, and major themes in the molecular response have been established. Particular areas of…

Plant Responses to Drought, Acclimation, and Stress Tolerance
TLDR
The analysed literature shows that plants have evolved a number of adaptive mechanisms that allow the photochemical and biochemical systems to cope with negative changes in environment, including increased water deficit.
Transgenic approaches to increase dehydration-stress tolerance in plants
TLDR
The advantages and limitations of transgenic approaches currently being used are discussed together with the importance of using stress-inducible promoters and the introduction of multiple genes for the improvement of dehydration-stress tolerance.
Molecular and genetic aspects of plant responses to osmotic stress.
TLDR
Arabidopsis is a useful genetic model system for this purpose and its relatives including the halophyte Thellungiella halophila, can serve as valuable complementary genetic model systems.
Salt stress and phyto-biochemical responses of plants - a review
TLDR
There is a need to determine the underlying biochemical mechanisms of salinity tolerance so as to provide plant breeders with appropriate indicators, and the possibility of using these biochemical characteristics as selection criteria for salt tolerance is discussed.
Identification of plant genes for abiotic stress resistance
TLDR
The application of ABA to plants mimics the effect of a stress condition and the hypothesis that the genetic program for tolerance is at least to some extent also present is proposed.
Molecular responses of higher plants to dehydration.
TLDR
The molecular responses to dehydration and desiccation are discussed, from the sensing and signalling of water deficit to the regulation of gene expression, focusing mainly on the model systems A. thaliana and C. plantagineum.
Dehydration tolerance in plants.
TLDR
This chapter defines what dehydration tolerance is and how it can be assessed, important prerequisites to understanding the response of a plant to water loss, and discusses the key biochemical aspects of tolerance focusing on carbohydrates, late embryogenesis abundant and heat shock proteins, reactive oxygen scavenging (ROS) pathways, and novel transcription factors.
Wild plant resources for studying molecular mechanisms of drought/strong light stress tolerance
TLDR
Recent molecular studies on the wild plants have shed new lights on the unique features of their resistance mechanisms, which are markedly different from those found in the model and/or domesticated crop plants.
Understanding plant responses to drought - from genes to the whole plant.
TLDR
Attention is drawn to the perception and signalling processes (chemical and hydraulic) of water deficits, which are essential for a holistic understanding of plant resistance to stress, which is needed to improve crop management and breeding techniques.

Molecular Biological Responses to Drought in Maize
TLDR
Developmental studies of seeds and physiological studies of the effects of water stress indicate that ABA controls quantitative and qualitative aspects of the accumulation of specific mRNAs and proteins during ABA-induced responses.
New Cold- and Drought-Regulated Gene from Medicago sativa
TLDR
The isolation of a new full-length cDNA clone (MsaciA) that is cold and drought regulated in alfalfa is reported, which represents a new member of this gene family.
Stress Protection of Transgenic Tobacco by Production of the Osmolyte Mannitol
TLDR
Transgenic tobacco plants that synthesize and accumulate the sugar alcohol mannitol were engineered by introduction of a bacterial gene that encodes manNitol 1 -phosphate dehydrogenase, which resulted in an increased ability to tolerate high salinity.
A gene induced by the plant hormone abscisic acid in response to water stress encodes a glycine-rich protein
TLDR
The isolation of complementary DNA and genomic clones of a gene that is ABA-inducible in the maize embryo, and whose messenger RNA accumulates in epidermial cells, which is also induced by water stress and wounding in leaves is described.
Adaptations to Environmental Stresses.
TLDR
Investigating plants under stress can learn about the plasticity of metabolic pathways and the limits to their functioning, and questions of an ecological and evolutionary nature need investigation.
Improved Performance of Transgenic Fructan-Accumulating Tobacco under Drought Stress
TLDR
The introduction of fructans in this non-fructan-producing species mediates enhanced resistance to drought stress and the total nonstructural carbohydrate content was higher in the transgenic plants.
Organ-Specific and Environmentally Regulated Expression of Two Abscisic Acid-Induced Genes of Tomato : Nucleotide Sequence and Analysis of the Corresponding cDNAs.
TLDR
Two cDNAs represent mRNAs that accumulate in response to water deficit and elevated levels of endogenous abscisic acid in detached leaves of drought-stressed tomato and indicate that more than one mechanism exists for the regulation of their corresponding genes.
Characterization of a rice gene showing organ-specific expression in response to salt stress and drought.
TLDR
The organ-specific response of salT is correlatable with the pattern of Na+ accumulation during salt stress, and was found to contain an open reading frame coding for a protein of 145 amino acid residues.
Resistance to abiotic stresses.
World food production is limited primarily by environmental stresses. It is very difficult to find ‘stress free’ areas where crops may approach their potential yields. Abiotic environmental factors
