Shaft kiln cement has the disadvantage of less steady quality and higher free calcium oxide (F-CaO) content compared with rotary kiln cement. F-CaO hydrates very slowly during the course of setting and hardening of the cement, and its further hydration in hardened cement paste may cause volume expansion. If the F-CaO content reaches a certain extent, the structure of hardened cement paste would be damaged, and tensile strength decreased.
