We present near- and mid-infrared photometry and spectroscopy from PAIRITEL, IRTF, and Spitzer of a metallicity-unbiased sample of 117 cool, hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs (WDs) from the Palomar-Green survey and find five with excess radiation in the infrared, translating to a 4.3+2.7− 1.2% frequency of debris disks. This is slightly higher than, but consistent with the results of previous surveys. Using an initial–final mass relation, we apply this result to the progenitor stars of our…

The frequency of planetary debris around young white dwarfs

Context. Heavy metals in the atmospheres of white dwarfs are thought in many cases to be accreted from a circumstellar debris disk, which was formed by the tidal disruption of a rocky planetary body

The frequency and infrared brightness of circumstellar discs at white dwarfs

White dwarfs whose atmospheres are polluted by terrestrial-like planetary debris have become a powerful and unique tool to study evolved planetary systems. This paper presents results for an unbiased

DUSTY DISKS AROUND CENTRAL STARS OF PLANETARY NEBULAE

Only a few percent of cool, old white dwarfs (WDs) have infrared excesses interpreted as originating in small hot disks due to the infall and destruction of single asteroids that come within the

The unbiased frequency of planetary signatures around single and binary white dwarfs using Spitzer and Hubble

This paper presents combined Spitzer IRAC and Hubble COS results for a double-blind survey of 195 single and 22 wide binary white dwarfs for infrared excesses and atmospheric metals. The selection

A YOUNG WHITE DWARF WITH AN INFRARED EXCESS

Using observations of Spitzer/IRAC, we report the serendipitous discovery of excess infrared emission from a single white dwarf PG 0010+280. At a temperature of 27,220 K and a cooling age of 16 Myr,

The dust never settles: collisional production of gas and dust in evolved planetary systems

Multi-epoch infrared photometry from Spitzer is used to monitor circumstellar discs at white dwarfs, which are consistent with disrupted minor planets whose debris is accreted and chemically

The Statistics of Extended Debris Disks Measured with Gaia and Planck

Thermal emission from debris disks around stars has been measured using targeted and resolved observations. We present an alternative likelihood-based approach in which temperature maps from the

NEAR-INFRARED IMAGING OF WHITE DWARFS WITH CANDIDATE DEBRIS DISKS

We have carried out JHKs imaging of 12 white dwarf debris disk candidates from the WIRED Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 catalog, aiming to confirm or rule out disks among these sources. On

THE DROP DURING LESS THAN 300 DAYS OF A DUSTY WHITE DWARF'S INFRARED LUMINOSITY

We report Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera photometry of WD J0959−0200, a white dwarf that displays excess infrared radiation from a disk, likely produced by a tidally disrupted planetesimal. We find

White dwarfs with planetary remnants in the era of Gaia – I. Six emission line systems

White dwarfs with emission lines from gaseous debris discs are among the rarest examples of planetary remnant hosts, but at the same time they are key objects for studying the final evolutionary
