JANUARY 2008 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he first weather forecasts executed on an automatic computer were described in a landmark paper by Charney et al. (1950, hereafter CFvN). They used the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), which was the most powerful computer available for the project, albeit primitive by modern standards. The results were sufficiently encouraging that numerical weather prediction became an operational reality within about five years. CFvN… Expand

The Origin and Rise of Numerical Weather Prediction
The first known effort to compute atmospheric changes by physical methods was recorded by Felix M. Exner (1908). Exner was a professor of geophysics at the University of Vienna and the author of aExpand
The ENIAC Computations of 1950—Gateway to Numerical Weather Prediction
TLDR
The first numerical weather prediction was made on the ENIAC computer in 1950 and some of the historical background is given and a partially narrative account of it is given. Expand

The Emergence of Numerical Weather Prediction: Richardson's Dream
TLDR
This book discusses weather and prediction by numerical process, Laplace tidal equations, and Richardson's forecast-factory: the $64,000 question. Expand
Weather Prediction by Numerical Process
TLDR
This chapter discusses the arrangement of points and instants in sequence, and some remaining problems of computing forms. Expand

The NCEP and NCAR are cooperating in a project (denoted “reanalysis”) to produce a 40-year record of global analyses of atmospheric fields in support of the needs of the research and climateExpand
The National Meteorological Center's spectral-statistical interpolation analysis system
TLDR
Results from several months of parallel testing with the NMC spectral model have been very encouraging, and favorable features include smoother analysis increments, greatly reduced changes from initialization, and significant improvement of 1-5-day forecasts. Expand

Numerical Prediction and Dynamic Meteorology
This book is best described as a textbook of modern numerical weather-prediction models. The title places numerical prediction before dynamic meteorology, and this is a fair reflection of the book'sExpand
