Colostrum is the richest natural source of zoonutrients. Proline Rich Polypeptides (PRP) are active immune modulating zoonutrient peptides found in all mammalian colostrum. In particular PRP are thought to modulate thymus function, specifically the T helper 1 / T helper 2 (Th1 / Th2) balance. Th1, modulating cellular immunity, and Th2, modulating humeral immunity, are classified on the basis of the cytokines they produce. To demonstrate the efficacy of PRP in down regulating Th2 dominance an…

Studying the effect of a proline-rich polypeptide from ovine colostrum on the humoral immune response in mice against sheep red blood cells and the permeability of skin vessels in guinea-pigs suggest that prostaglandins are involved in the activity of the polypePTide.

Testing whether dexamethasone (DEXA) administration influences the proliferation, apoptosis, and number of B- and T-lymphocytes in Peyer's patches and thymus in calves fed colostrum or a milk-derived formula found it to reduce cell proliferation rates and enhance apoptotic rates in follicles of PP.

The effect of a proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) isolated from early sheep colostrum on the graft-versus-host (GvH) reaction was studied and some of the cortisone-resistant thymocytes become cortis one-sensitive when treated with PRP and the ability to induce the GvH reaction was reduced.

The lack of effect of the polypeptide on proteolytic enzymes ruled out the possibility that it is an inhibitor of proteinases, and the proline-rich polyPEptide is not an amphipathic protein.

Data suggests that a Th1-like cytokine pattern can be observed in CD4+ T-lymphocytes in IS in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis, and the value of IS vs BALF in the follow-up of these patients is needed.
