Twelve lines of evidence bearing on the determination of the distance to the Crab nebula and NP 0532 are discussed. Some of these depend on the dynamics of the nebular expansion, some on physical processes in the supernova or its remnant, and some on the nature of the intervening interstellar medium. An unweighted average of the various methods yields a distance of about 1930 pc. Key words: Crab nebula - NP 0532- distances to cosmic objects
Was SN 1054 A Type II Supernova
The Crab Nebula is the most studied of all supernova remnants, yet it has not been possible to reconcile its properties with either of the two commonly observed types of supernovae. This contribution
The surprising Crab pulsar and its nebula: a review
TLDR
The Crab nebula and its pulsar (referred to together as 'the Crab') have historically played a central role in astrophysics and several unique discoveries have been made recently.
EVOLUTION OF THE CRAB NEBULA IN A LOW ENERGY SUPERNOVA
The nature of the supernova leading to the Crab Nebula has long been controversial because of the low energy that is present in the observed nebula. One possibility is that there is significant
The Crab nebula and the class of Type IIn-P supernovae caused by sub-energetic electron-capture explosions
What sort of supernova gave rise to the Crab Nebula? There are several indications that the Crab arose from a sub-energetic explosion of an 8-10 Msun star, this appears to conflict with the high
Crab Observational Status: Nebulae, Pulsations, and Flares
The Crab, both pulsar and nebula, is one of the most studied astrophysical objects. This chapter reviews our knowledge of the system, as observed at different frequencies. It pays special attention
Temporal Variability of the X-Ray Emission of the Crab Nebula Torus
We present ROSAT HRI observations of the Crab Nebula spanning the 6 years from 1991 March to 1997 March. A comparison of the observations reveals that there are significant (>10 σ) differences in the
An earlier explosion date for the Crab Nebula supernova
The Chinese first reported the Crab Nebula supernova on 1054 July 5. Ecclesiastical documents from the near east reported it in April and May of 1054. More than 33 petroglyphs made by Native

Revealing the Most Energetic Light from Pulsars and Their Nebulae
  • 2019
Since the commissioning of the first magic telescope in 2004 (see Sect. 3.3), the magic collaboration has always considered the Crab nebula and pulsar as valuable targets for observational campaigns
A SURVEY OF MOLECULAR HYDROGEN IN THE CRAB NEBULA
We have carried out a near-infrared, narrowband imaging survey of the Crab Nebula, in the H2 2.12 μm and Brγ 2.17 μm lines, using the Spartan Infrared camera on the SOAR Telescope. Over a 2.′8 × 5.′1
The Crab Nebula: A Gamma-Ray Factory in Our Backyard
The Crab Nebula is the most studied astronomical source in the sky. At VHE gamma rays, it is the strongest steady source in the sky and the first one discovered, back in 1989. The source is very well
