A combination of carbohydrate analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize the polysaccharides of the pennate diatom, Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg. Polymeric substances were fractionated into those in the spent culture medium (SCM) and those sequentially extracted from the cells with water at 45° C (WW), NaHCO3 containing EDTA at 95° C (HB), and 1 M NaOH containing NaBH4 at 95° C. Carbohydrate, protein, and sulfate were detected in all the fractions, but their…

VARIATIONS IN THE SUBSTITUTED 3‐LINKED MANNANS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE SILICIFIED WALLS OF DIATOMS 1

Although definitive functions for these polysaccharides in diatom biology remain uncertain, a possible role in biosilicification is discussed.

EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX ASSEMBLY IN DIATOMS (BACILLARIOPHYCEAE). V. ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ON POLYSACCHARIDE SYNTHESIS IN THE MODEL DIATOM, PHAEODACTYLUM TRICORNUTUM 1

The increased deoxy‐ and O‐methylated sugar content under unfavorable environments enhances the hydrophobicity of the polymers, whereas the anionic components may play important roles in ionic cross‐linking, suggesting that these changes could ameliorate the effects of salinity or P‐stress.

The glucans extracted with warm water from diatoms are mainly derived from intracellular chrysolaminaran and not extracellular polysaccharides

Nearly all diatom cells incubated with a fluorescent dye during warm water treatment at 30°C or 60°C incorporated the dye, demonstrating that the membrane integrity of the diatoms was compromised and supporting the contention that intracellular glucan was released during the treatment.

THE COMPLEX EXTRACELLULAR POLYSACCHARIDES OF MAINLY CHAIN‐FORMING FRESHWATER DIATOM SPECIES FROM EPILITHIC BIOFILMS 1

Principal component analysis indicates a correlation between carbohydrate composition of EPS fractions and the phylogenetic relationship of the respective species, indicating that EPS analyses under defined culture conditions may support taxonomic analyses.

Biochemical Composition and Changes of Extracellular Polysaccharides (ECPS) Produced during Microphytobenthic Biofilm Development (Marennes-Oléron, France)

The main goal of this work was to study the dynamics and biochemical composition of extracellular polysaccharides (ECPS) produced during the development of a microphytobenthic biofilm in a European intertidal mudflat (Marennes-Oléron Bay, France) during winter.

Diatom-Derived Carbohydrates as Factors Affecting Bacterial Community Composition in Estuarine Sediments

It is suggested that taxon- and substrate-specific responses within the bacterial community are involved in the degradation of diatom-derived extracellular carbohydrates in sediment slurry microcosms.

Biofilm and capsule formation of the diatom Achnanthidium minutissimum are affected by a bacterium

It is found that bacteria have a strong impact on the biofilm formation of the pennate diatom Achnanthidium minutissimum, and Interestingly, capsule and biofilm induction can be achieved by addition of bacterial spent medium, indicating that soluble hydrophobic molecules produced by the bacterium may mediate the diatom/bacteria interaction.
