There is a great deal of disagreement in the literature as to the presence or absence of anaerobes in the fetid pus of suppurations from the lung. In 1893, Veillon examined the bacteriology of fetid pus and first pointed out the role of anaerobes in these cases. In 1898, Veillon and Zuber 1 studied systematically the diseases characterized by gangrene; they isolated a number of anaerobic organisms and concluded that this process is elicited by them.
