We have developed an approach to computing ethics that entails the discovery of ethical principles through machine learning and the incorporation of these principles into a system's decision procedure. We summarize our pertinent previous work in machine ethics and present an extension of this work in the domain of eldercare: ETHEL, a prototype system that uses a machine-discovered ethical principle to provide guidance for its actions.
