This is an introductory review of the AdS/CFT correspondence and of the ideas that led to its formulation. We show how comparison of stacks of D3-branes with corresponding supergravity solutions leads to dualities between conformal large $N$ gauge theories in 4 dimensions and string backgrounds of the form $AdS_5\times X_5$ where $X_5$ is an Einstein manifold. The gauge invariant chiral operators of the field theory are in one-to-one correspondence with the supergravity modes, and their…
In this thesis we present studies in the AdS/CFT correspondence that intend to push the present knowledge beyond the $N = 4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) paradigm. The first part is concerned with the
The AdS/CFT duality is an equivalence between string theory and gauge theory. The duality allows to use calculations done in classical gravity to derive results in strongly-coupled field theories. In
4D Lorentzian conformal field theory (CFT) is mapped into 5D anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS), from the viewpoint of "geometrizing" conformal current algebra. A large-N expansion of the CFT is shown to
We review how the AdS/CFT correspondence is motivated within string theory, and discuss how it is generalized to gauge/gravity duality. In particular, we highlight the relation to quantum information

The first lecture is of a qualitative nature. We explain the concept and the uses of duality in string theory and field theory. The prospects to understand QCD, the theory of the strong interactions,
This thesis consists in a self-contained study of gauge/gravity dualities in the line of the KlebanovWitten model. Here we explore first the known Maldacena duality that relates N = 4 SYM theory in

We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity dualities with N = 1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes at

We study supergravity backgrounds encoded through the gauge/string correspondence by the SU(N) × SU(N) theory arising on N D3-branes on the conifold. As discussed in hep-th/9905104, the dynamics of
This thesis is devoted to a study of certain examples of gauge/string duality related to warped throat backgrounds in string theory. Namely, we consider a family of IIB SUGRA solutions dual to a
In this thesis we study microscopic aspects of Calabi-Yau black holes in string theory. We compute the absorption cross-section of the space-time massless scalars by the world-volume of D2-branes,

Recently, it has been proposed by Maldacena that large $N$ limits of certain conformal field theories in $d$ dimensions can be described in terms of supergravity (and string theory) on the product of

We formulate an extension of Maldacena’s AdS/CFT conjectures to the case of branes located at singular points in the ambient transverse space. For singularities which occur at finite distance in the
We show that the large-N limits of certainconformal field theories in various dimensions includein their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes,
We embed the large N Chern–Simons/topological string duality in ordinary superstrings. This corresponds to a large N duality between generalized gauge systems with N=1 supersymmetry in four

Abstract. We study some aspects of Maldacena's large-N correspondence between ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal gauge theory on the D3-brane and maximal supergravity on AdS$_5 \times S_5$ by introducing
