This is an introductory review of the AdS/CFT correspondence and of the ideas that led to its formulation. We show how comparison of stacks of D3-branes with corresponding supergravity solutions leads to dualities between conformal large $N$ gauge theories in 4 dimensions and string backgrounds of the form $AdS_5\times X_5$ where $X_5$ is an Einstein manifold. The gauge invariant chiral operators of the field theory are in one-to-one correspondence with the supergravity modes, and their… Expand
We consider generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence in which probe branes are embedded in gravity backgrounds dual to either conformal or confining gauge theories. These correspond to defectExpand
AdS/CFT beyond the $N = 4$ SYM paradigm
In this thesis we present studies in the AdS/CFT correspondence that intend to push the present knowledge beyond the $N = 4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) paradigm. The first part is concerned with theExpand
Charged Black Holes and the ADS/CFT Correspondence
The AdS/CFT duality is an equivalence between string theory and gauge theory. The duality allows to use calculations done in classical gravity to derive results in strongly-coupled field theories. InExpand
From Fixed Points to the Fifth Dimension
4D Lorentzian conformal field theory (CFT) is mapped into 5D anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS), from the viewpoint of "geometrizing" conformal current algebra. A large-N expansion of the CFT is shown toExpand
Introduction to Gauge/Gravity Duality (TASI Lectures 2017)
We review how the AdS/CFT correspondence is motivated within string theory, and discuss how it is generalized to gauge/gravity duality. In particular, we highlight the relation to quantum informationExpand
Topics in gauge/gravity dualities
This thesis consists in a self-contained study of gauge/gravity dualities in the line of the KlebanovWitten model. Here we explore first the known Maldacena duality that relates N = 4 SYM theory inExpand

We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity dualities with N = 1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes atExpand

String Theory on Five Dimensional Anti de Sitter Space-Times: Fundamental Aspects and Applications
In this thesis we study basic properties and applications of String Theory on AdS5 backgrounds. We do this in the framework of the AdS/CFT Correspondence and use our results to learn about fourExpand
REVIEWS OF TOPICAL PROBLEMS: Gauge theories as string theories: the first results
The gauge/string theory duality in curved space is discussed mainly using a non-Abelian conformal N = 4 supersymmetric gauge theory and the theory of a closed superstring in the AdS5 × S5 metric asExpand
