Focusing on some issues concerning methods for thematic analysis, a conceptual distinction between ‘pattern’ recognition and ‘theme’ interpretation is proposed, which takes into account word cooccurrences within textual units. Subsequently, three ‘postulates’ concerning the automated processes for thematic analysis implemented in the T-LAB system are presented.
