Because of concerns regarding health, safety, and aesthetics, a test that identifies the presence of sewage sludge or its products (biosolids) in commercial materials such as soil conditioners and composts would be useful. This test could also trace the effluent plume from a sewage treatment plant. We have discovered that synthetic fibers serve as such an indicator. Synthetic fibers are abundant in sludge, sludge products, and sewage treatment plant effluents. The fibers evidently are…

Wastewater treatment plant effluent and microfiber pollution: focus on industry-specific wastewater

The production, use, and disposal of synthetic textiles potentially release a significant amount of microfibers into the environment. Studies performed on municipal wastewater treatment plants

A review of microplastic fibres: generation, transport, and vectors for metal(loid)s in terrestrial environments.

The laundering of synthetic fabrics has been identified as an important and diffuse source of microplastic (<5 mm) fibre contamination to wastewater systems. Home laundering can release up to 13

Microplastics in Sewage Sludge: Effects of Treatment.

The potential for sewage sludge treatment processes to affect the risk of MP pollution prior to land spreading is highlighted and may have implications for legislation governing the application of biosolids to agricultural land.

Use of trialkylamines as an indicator of urban sewage in sludges, coastal waters and sediments

Coastal areas receive a variety of land-based organic inputs, both natural and synthetic. The identification of specific organic markers in different marine compartments may be used to trace the

Phthalate ester plasticizers: a new class of marine pollutant.

The phthalate plasticizers were found in almost all samples analyzed; DEHP was present at higher concentrations than the PCB's or DDT's in water and sediment.
