Pyoverdines, the main siderophores produced by fluorescent Pseudomonads, comprise a fluorescent dihydroxyquinoline chromophore attached to a strain-specific peptide. These molecules are thought to be synthesized as non-fluorescent precursor peptides that are then modified to give functional pyoverdines.
