Non-spherical patchy particles are potential candidates as building blocks for the design of target colloidal structures via spontaneous self-organization. We report a facile scheme to synthesize non-spherical particles with patchy electrostatic interactions. In this method, charged spherical latex particles such as polystyrene (PS) are deformed unequally at an oil-water interface due to heating and partial swelling. The spherical particles then evolve into non-spherical shapes such as 'acorn…

Shape-Induced Deformation, Capillary Bridging, and Self-Assembly of Cuboids at the Fluid-Fluid Interface.
TLDR
The controlled assembly of anisotropic particles through shape-induced interface deformations is shown to be a potential route for the fabrication of novel functional materials and the difference in the nature of the assembly structures formed at the air-water interface and in the bulk water phase indicates that the interfacial assembly of these particles is controlled by the capillary interactions.

Experimental Study of Self-Assembling Systems Characterized by Directional Interactions
Self-assembly in colloidal model systems is no different than self-assembly in atomic or molecular systems, other than that model systems are designed for the easy inspection of their dynamics and

Self-assembly and rheology of ellipsoidal particles at interfaces.
TLDR
The mechanical properties of these monolayers, as measured by surface shear rheology, showed that the monolayer of ellipsoids exhibit a substantial surface modulus even at low surface coverage and can be used to create more elastic monol layers compared to aggregate networks of spheres of the same size and surface properties.
