Escherichia intermedia cells were immobilized by entrapment in a polyacrylamide gel and used for l-dopa synthesis from pyrocatechol, pyruvate and ammonia. An immobilized cell preparation containing 75 mg cells/g gel retained 45%–50% of the activity of free cells. The effect of temperature, pH and substrate concentration of the initial rate of l-dopa synthesis was very similar for free and immobilized cells.
