The defining feature of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds is a cyclic molecular structure stabilized by the delocalization of π electrons that, according to the Hückel rule, need to total 4n + 2 (n = 1,2,…); cyclic compounds with 4n π electrons are antiaromatic and unstable. But in 1964, Heilbronner predicted on purely theoretical grounds that cyclic molecules with the topology of a Möbius band—a ring constructed by joining the ends of a rectangular strip after having given one end half a twist… Expand
Chiral Aromaticities. A Topological Exploration of Möbius Homoaromaticity.
TLDR
It is suggested that the ELF and ELFπ thresholds for any basin found in the homoregion are better indicators of the delocalized nature of the homoaromatic interaction and the aromaticity of the system. Expand
Demonstration of "Möbius" aromaticity in planar metallacycles.
TLDR
This work reports the first computationally confirmed 4npi aromatic planar metallacyclic examples and their building principles, and the role of wave function boundary conditions (periodic vs. antiperiodic) in chemistry is further stressed. Expand
Möbius-Hückel topology switching in an expanded porphyrin cation radical as studied by EPR and ENDOR spectroscopy.
TLDR
The present EPR and ENDOR work on the radical cation state of compound 1 is the first study of a ground-state open-shell system which exhibits a Hückel-Möbius topology switch that is controlled by temperature, like in the case of the closed-shell precursor. Expand
Planar Möbius aromatic pentalenes incorporating 16 and 18 valence electron osmiums.
TLDR
The realization of osmapentalenes are reported, the first planar Möbius aromatic complexes with 16 and 18 valence electron transition metals, illustrating ambiphilic carbyne reactivity, which is seldom observed in transition metal chemistry. Expand
Möbius aromaticity and antiaromaticity in expanded porphyrins.
TLDR
It is suggested that the generation of Möbius topologies in expanded porphyrins is easier than hitherto appreciated. Expand
Figure eights, Möbius bands, and more: conformation and aromaticity of porphyrinoids.
TLDR
The conformational processes occurring in porphyrin analogues are often coupled to other chemical phenomena, and can thus be exploited as a means of constructing functional molecular devices. Expand
σ-Aromaticity in a Fully Unsaturated Ring.
TLDR
A strong correlation between nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) values and extra cyclic resonance energies (ECREs) is demonstrated, which are used to evaluate the σ-aromaticity in an unsaturated three-membered ring of cyclopropene, which were computed by molecular orbital (MO) theory and valence bond (VB) theory, respectively. Expand
Aromaticity of metal acetylacetonates and a Möbius chelate of a cadmium(II) complex of an N4 helical ligand
Abstract Interaction of a benzene C–H tip with a metallacycle of various metal acetylacetonates are studied by means of DFT calculations at M062X/LanL2DZ and M062X/6-311++G(2d,p) levels. It isExpand
Quadruply Twisted Hückel-Aromatic Dodecaphyrin.
TLDR
The syn-isomer of meso-Pentafluorophenyl-substituted 5,35-(1,4-phenylene)bridged [56]dodecaphyrin was revealed to be the first example of Hückel aromatic molecule with a quadruply twisted structure. Expand
Coarctate and Möbius: The Helical Orbitals of Allene and Other Cumulenes
TLDR
The origins and detailed composition of the helical orbitals of cumulenes are traced, which emerge in the simplest Hückel model and are not much modified in advanced computations. Expand

TLDR
The stabilization energies (B3LYP/6-31G) of planar [4n]annulenes, evaluated by a new indene-isoindene isomerization method, reveal that all 4n pi-electron rings larger than the energetically unfavorable cyclobutadiene are only slightly destabilized by the pi-Electron interactions. Expand
