Monodispersed copolymer latex particles functionalized by surface carboxylate groups are used as effective colloidal templates for the controlled crystallization of calcium carbonate in solution. After template removal, well-defined, calcite single crystals exhibiting a rhombohedral morphology and uniform surface pores are obtained.
