In most mammalian ovaries, the cumulus cell-oocyte complex (COC) expands at the time of ovulation by depositing an extensive extracellular matrix between the cumulus cells. This phenomenon can be reproduced in vitro by culturing COCs with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and serum.
