The largest isolated clusters of Group 14 elements, giant truncated tetrahedra of Ge1212- , are found in the title compound. RbLi7 Ge8 , which is an electronically balanced, saltlike Zintl phase, was synthesized by heating the corresponding stoichiometric mixture of elements.

Understanding the alkali – Germanium interaction in the ternary Zintl phase Li18Na2Ge17: First-principles study
The Zintl ternary phase, Li18Na2Ge17, have been synthesized typically from a very electropositive metals (Ge) and more electronegative main group metals Na and Li. We attempted to understand its
Homoatomic Polyanions of the Early p-Block Elements
This article reviews the chemistry of homoatomic polyanions of the early p-block elements (groups 13–15). The focus is on species that have been structurally authenticated in solid-state compounds
Li18Na2Ge17--a compound demonstrating cation effects on cluster shapes and crystal packing in ternary Zintl phases.
The novel ternary Zintl phase Li18Na2Ge17 was synthesized from a stoichiometric melt and characterized crystallographically and experimentally verified by its diamagnetism, demonstrating the great effects that cations exert on such ZintL phases through optimized cluster sheathing and space filling.
Polyanions of Group 14 and Group 15 Elements in Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Solid State Compounds and Solvate Structures
The chapter discusses the formation of discrete polyanions of group 14 and group 15 elements in solid state structures of alkali and alkaline earth metal compounds depending on the degree of

Five Ternary Zintl Phases in the Systems Alkali-Metal–Indium–Bismuth
Abstract Five new compounds of alkali metal, indium, and bismuth were synthesized by direct fusion of the elements. The structures of these compounds, Na3In2Bi3 (I) (refined composition
Zintl Phases K4–xNaxSi4 (1 ≤ x ≤ 2.2) and K7NaSi8: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Solid‐State NMR Spectroscopic Investigations
The Zintl phases K4–xNaxSi4 (1 ≤ x ≤ 2.2) and K7NaSi8 are the first representatives of the K–Na–Si system, and both contain tetrahedral [Si4]4– clusters and a charge-balancing number of K+ and Na+

Deltahedral Clusters in Neat Solids: Synthesis and Structure of the Zintl Phase Cs(4)Pb(9) with Discrete Pb(9)(4-) Clusters.
Isolated clusters of Pb94- with the shape of monocapped square antiprisms are found in Cs4Pb9 made by direct fusion of the elements. A “close-packed” layer of clusters viewed along c of the
Ge 94−: A Deltahedral Zintl Ion Now Made in the Solid‐State
The structural analogy to many transition metal tetrahalides, as indicated by the presence of chains of cis-edge-sharing octahedra, also extends on the arrangement of these structural units relative
Synthesis and Structure of the Zintl-Phase K(4)Pb(9) Containing Isolated Pb(9)(4)(-) Clusters of Two Different Geometries.
The first nine-atom deltahedral clusters of lead in the solid state are found in the Zintl-phase K(4)Pb(9) in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/m, Z = 4.

Binary alkali metal compounds with the Zintl anions [Ge9]4- and [Sn9]4-
The binary germanides M12Ge17 and M4Ge9 (M Na, K, Rb, Cs) and the stannides M12Sn17 and M4Sn9 (M K, Rb, Cs) were identified by a combination of direct synthesis, thermogravimetric analysis,
Synthesis and Characterization of Stable Stoichiometric Clathrates of Silicon and Germanium: Cs8Na16Si136 and Cs8Na16Ge136
The search for new and better thermoelectric materials has recently brought to light a somewhat forgotten class of compounds, the clathrates of group 14. This and some purely theoretical interest in

Synthetic explorations have now established that many of the clusters can in fact be obtained from neat (solvent free) high-temperature reactions of binary to quaternary systems, particularly for the heavier tetrel and triel elements.
Synthesis, characterization, and bonding of indium clusters: Na7In11.8, a novel network structure containing closo-In16 and nido-In11 clusters
Reactions of the elements in proportions near 37.3 at. % Na at [approximately] 500, 410, and then 250C readily produce the well-crystallized title phase. The tetragonal structure at the indium-rich
Homoatomic Bonding of Main Group Elements
Clusters of main group elements are not rare. On the contrary, it is becoming difficult to avoid the discovery of new substances of this type. Clusters are the natural intermediate stages between an
