The complexes [PtII(en)2][PtIV(en)2X2][PtIII2(H2P2O5)4X2](en = 1,2-diaminoethane) have been obtained as copper coloured needles (X = Br) or metallic green dichroic microcrystals (X = I) by the reaction of K4[PtII2(H2P2O5)4]·2H2O with [PtIV(en)2X2]X2 in aqueous solution at 100 °C. Spectroscopic evidence favours a formulation for the complexes which involves a halogen-bridged linear-chain PtII–PtIV cation in association with a dimeric PtIII anion.
