Introduction The cancer of the large bowel and rectum accounts for 10% of cancers in men and for 11% of cancers in women. It was the second most-common site-specific cancer in Europe in 2006 (Ferlay et al 2007) affecting both men and women (after the breast cancer), with an increasing incidence.
