}We reviewed published data on the frequency of underlying disorders in schoolchildren with microscopic or gross isolated haematuria (IH), and evaluated management strategies. We found five reports of microscopic IH in screened asymptomatic schoolchildren, three reports of microscopic IH detected by case-finding, and five surveys of kidney biopsies in referred children with microscopic and gross IH. We listed the reported underlying disorders, and estimated the benefit from their early detection…

Variability in management of symptomless microhaematuria in schoolchildren.
- MedicinePostgraduate medical journal
- 1998
There was a marked and unexplained variability within and among the three groups of respondents regarding the extent of the evaluation of incidentally detected symptomless microhaematuria in schoolchildren, probably due to uncertainty about the scientifically appropriate way to approach this condition in a symptomless child.
Follow-up of children with isolated microscopic hematuria detected in a mass school urine screening test

Hematuria: Evaluation and Management

Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine and can be visible to the naked eye (macroscopic), detectable with microscopic analysis or found by dipstick testing of urine. Around 40% of…
Diagnostic tests used in the investigation of adult haematuria: a systematic review

As most patients investigated for asymptomatic haematuria will have negative test results, a noninvasive test for bladder cancer which can exclude the disease is highly desirable.
Clinical Scenario: Microscopic Hematuria and Atypical Cytology
- Medicine
- 2015
A 68-year-old man who was a former cigarette smoker was found to have atypical/suspicious cells on urinary cytology obtained during a work up for microscopic hematuria, and would not proceed with bladder or prostatic urethra biopsies, upper tract cytology, ureteroscopy, or submitting the urine for the FISH analysis unless cells consistent with cancer are identified by an experienced cytopathologist.
All that is blood is not schistosomiasis: experiences with reagent strip testing for urogenital schistosomiasis with special consideration to very-low prevalence settings
- MedicineParasites & Vectors
- 2015
Reagent strip testing for microhaematuria remains a good proxy for urogenital schistosomiasis, but implications of test results and scope of application differ depending on the setting in which reagent strips are employed.
Diagnostic tests and algorithms used in the investigation of haematuria: systematic reviews and economic evaluation.
- MedicineHealth technology assessment
- 2006
The evidence suggests that urine cytology has no application in ruling out malignancy or excluding patients from further investigation and the economic model for the detection of microhaematuria found that immediate microscopy following a positive dipstick test would improve diagnostic efficiency as it eliminates the high number of false positives produced by dipstick testing.
Nuclear matrix protein 22 is superior to voided urine cytology
- Medicine
- 2010
Evaluating the role of the nuclear matrix protein (NMP) 22 urine test as an alternative to urine cytology shows that NMP 22 is superior to urinary cytology in the investigation of adult haematuria, particularly with a negative predictive value of 97%.
Human and animal schistosomiasis and fascioliasis in a mobile pastoralist setting at Lake Chad : a one health approach

Assessment of treatment strategies and disease burden, and the mutual predictive potential of human and livestock trematode infections, provides evidence for the benefits of a One Health approach targeting diseases that share specific ecological traits to improve human and animal health.

- MedicineActa paediatrica Scandinavica

The outcome of screening detected IgA glomerulonephritis in children correlates with the level of proteinuria and the severity of renal pathology, and it is indicated that the outcome of screened children with proteinuria develops hypertension or renal insufficiency during the follow‐up period.

In Alport's syndrome, deafness, heavy proteinuria, segmental sclerosis and foam cells were not often present before the age of 10 years, whereas the "basket weave" alteration of the lamina densa was found in all three children biopsied under 5 years of age, so the importance of EM in the differential diagnosis from benign familial hematuria is emphasized.
