The development of immunomodulatory therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS) has had significant impact in altering the natural history of the disease. Although these agents reduce relapse rate and MRI-associated disease activity, they are only partially effective and do not ameliorate irreversible axonal injury, which produces much of the symptomatic burden of MS.
