730 I n 2006, China’s carbon dioxide emission rate reached 1.6 GtC (gigatons of carbon or 10 g carbon) per year (see chart, below) (1–3). Economic growth is projected to continue at higher than 7% per year; at this rate, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would quadruple in 20 years. The associated high CO 2 emission rate would substantially affect the goal of avoiding dangerous climate change as set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
